The “Penny Tree” in Fumina is a remarkable and historically significant giant, a
massive, hollowed-out Eucalyptus tree (likely a River Red Gum, Eucalyptus
camaldulensis). With a base diameter of approximately 20 feet, this impressive tree
served as a temporary residence for the Nicholas and Eva Penny family during the
early 1900s while they constructed a permanent home.
In 1905, Nicholas Penny ring-barked this 130-foot tree, which provided unique shelter
after it was hollowed out by fire. The Penny Tree offers a fascinating insight into the
resilience and resourcefulness of the past.
It’s quite striking to consider the experience of living inside such a tree for nine months.
Unfortunately, this extraordinary tree was lost to bushfires in 1926.
